Last week my younger brother asked me something that stopped me for a second.
He said “bro why do you still open Google? I just ask ChatGPT everything now.”
I thought about it. And honestly — he is right. Last month I used Google maybe 20 times. I used ChatGPT and Perplexity maybe 200 times. Same information. Faster answer. No ten blue links to click through.
And apparently courts around the world are noticing the same thing.
Because right now Google is fighting two very big legal battles at the same time. One in America. One in Germany. And both of them are asking the same basic question — is Google still the king of search? Or is AI already replacing it?
Let me explain everything in simple words.

First — What Happened in America?
Okay so this story starts in 2024.
A US court looked at Google and said — you are illegally controlling the search market. You are not winning because you are the best. You are winning because you paid everyone to make sure nobody else gets a chance.
How? Simple. You open your iPhone. What is the default search engine? Google. You open Chrome. Default search? Google. You buy a Samsung phone. Default search? Google.
This did not happen by accident. Google was paying billions every year to Apple, Samsung, and other companies to keep Google as the default search engine on their devices. So even if you wanted to try something else — you never even saw the option. Google was just always there.
The court said this is not fair competition. This is a monopoly.
So what is the punishment? A federal judge ordered Google to limit all default search and AI app contracts to one year. This means Google now has to renegotiate every deal with Apple, Samsung, and others every single year.
Before this ruling Google had long term deals. Multi year contracts. Very safe and comfortable. Now every year Apple can say — actually we want to try ChatGPT search this year. Every year Samsung can say — we want Perplexity as default now. Every year Google has to fight to keep its position.
That is a very big change. Imagine paying rent for your shop for 10 years and suddenly the owner says — I will decide every year if you can stay or not.
That is exactly where Google is right now.
Then — What Happened in Germany?
This one is different. And honestly more interesting.
You know Google AI Overviews? That box that appears at the top of Google search now with an AI generated answer. Instead of showing you links it just tells you the answer directly.
A German court recently ruled that Google is directly responsible for wrong information shown in its AI Overviews. Germany has laws that protect normal search engines from being blamed for wrong information. But the court said those laws do not apply to AI Overviews
Why? Because normal Google search just shows you links to other websites. It is not creating anything. It is just pointing you somewhere.
But AI Overview writes its own answer. In its own words. With its own structure. So if that answer is wrong — Google made that mistake. Not someone else.
This whole case started when Google AI Overview spread wrong information about two publishers based in Munich. It mixed them up with completely different companies and said things like these publishers were involved in scams and bad business practices.
Imagine you own a small business. You worked hard for years to build your name. And then Google AI tells millions of people that you are a scammer. Without any proof. Because it mixed you up with someone else.
The publishers sent Google a letter asking them to fix it. Google did not respond properly. So they went to court.
And they won.
The Munich court gave Google a temporary order stopping it from spreading this wrong information. This is the first time any court has treated AI generated search answers as the platform’s own words and held them directly responsible for it.
This is very big. Because if this becomes a global rule — Google has a massive problem. AI Overview gives millions of answers every day. If Google is responsible for every single wrong answer — that is a lot of legal trouble.
So What Does All This Mean for Normal People Like Us?
Okay let me explain this in the most simple way.
For the last 25 years Google had one job. You search something. It shows you links. You click. Done. Google never really answered your question. It just pointed you towards someone who might.
Now AI search is different. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview — they actually answer your question directly. No links needed. Just the answer.
This is better for users honestly. Faster. Easier. More direct.
But it creates two big problems.
Problem 1 — Wrong answers with full confidence
Normal Google search shows you ten links. If one link is wrong you can check another. You are in control.
AI search gives you one answer. Confidently. Like it is 100% sure. But sometimes it is completely wrong. And most people just believe it without checking.
Studies show that only 1% of people actually click on the links that AI Overview shows below its answer. That means 99 out of 100 people just read the AI answer and move on. They never check if it is correct. Yahoo!
That is a very scary number when you think about it.
Problem 2 — Who is responsible when AI is wrong?
With normal search — nobody is responsible. Google just showed you a link. The website owner wrote the wrong thing. Not Google’s problem.
With AI search — Google wrote the answer. So now it is Google’s problem. The German court just confirmed this.
And this opens a very big door. If every person or company that got wrongly described by Google AI Overview can now sue Google — that is potentially millions of cases worldwide.
And What About Google’s Future?
Here is the most interesting part of all this.
The US court trial is now turning into a full fight about the future of AI. Executives from ChatGPT and Perplexity already appeared in court against Google. And one lawyer said directly — the future of competition in search is actually in AI.
Think about that for a second. The court is not just asking if Google cheated in search. It is asking — is search itself becoming old? Is AI the new search? And if yes — should Google be allowed to control that too?
Right now Google controls more than 90% of the global search market. But companies like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search are growing very fast. And young people especially are already switching.
My brother is not alone. Millions of people are asking AI instead of Googling. Slowly but clearly the habit is changing.
My Honest Feeling on All This
I have used Google since I was a kid. It was the first thing I opened on the computer. It felt like magic — type anything, find anything.
But now when I open Google I feel like I am doing extra work. Click this link. Scroll past ads. Open another tab. Compare two articles. Find the answer somewhere in the middle.
With AI search I just ask and get the answer. Like asking a friend.
So honestly? I understand why courts are asking these questions. The world is changing. The way we find information is changing. And the rules should change too.
But I also think we need to be careful. AI giving wrong answers confidently is a real problem. The German court did the right thing by holding Google responsible. Because if nobody is responsible for wrong AI answers — we are all in trouble.
